For the month of November, SOIL presents Cachesphere, a collaborative installation of recent works by Ben Hirschkoff and Philippe Hyojung Kim. Pairings of Ben and Philippe’s works will be displayed side by side, echoing their works’ materiality and forms, composed of plastic/acrylic remnants gathered in each of their studios.
Over time, their obsession over plastic and its synthetic, ubiquitous, and malleable nature have led them to a bit of hoarding and collecting. Especially during the pandemic, they each had to confront this absurd cached state of plastic in their own studios. Beyond the plastic’s alluring assurance of universality, clarity, protection, and presumed permanence, it also does an incredible job at replicating and caching itself mysteriously in studio settings to the point of causing physical and mental anxieties that have haunted both artists for years.
In an effort to instill some semblance of humanity and humor into the hyper-processed-ancient-zombie-mutant-planktons that is plastic...during a time of a seemingly endless pandemic...Ben and Philippe’s works carry a sense of light-heartedness, play, and joy, however plasticky-fake they may be.
