Mapping SOIL’s Legacy: A Living Archive of Artist-Run Innovation

This interactive data visualization traces 30 years of SOIL Gallery’s history, mapping a network of 170+ current and former artist members since 1995. Using cultural data visualization, linked open data, and interactive mapping, this digital archive expands access for curators, researchers, and institutions across the semantic web.

This initiative is a work in progress, led by SOIL member Genevieve Tremblay, in collaboration with José de la Parra and Rachel Wright. Funded by 4Culture Heritage (Collections Care Program), this first phase ensures that SOIL’s cultural legacy remains visible, accessible, and relevant for future generations.

Our next phase will be focused on verifying member data, mapping SOIL’s archive of 350+ exhibitions, and further activating this rich cultural ecosystem.
