ancient grains is based on a single installation artwork by SOIL member Tyna Ontko.
Influenced by an upbringing in the Pacific Northwest, Ontko's practice centers around a modern interpretation of the popular folk art medium of chainsaw and power tool carving. Using locally sourced yellow cedar, she bases the forms for her sculptures off of objects found in everyday life-- a cowboy hat, an anvil, a mortar and pestle.
The sculptures are then arranged among other objects, images, and materials, where in the context of a gallery setting, they are cut from the performance of certainty and ripe with a curiosity for the way animate and inanimate things touch and affect one another.
