Words have the power to control lives, influence minds, and cause immeasurable harm. Ilana Zweschi targets destructive texts and documents with the purpose of transforming and disarming them. By creating handwritten algorithms, Zweschi turns the raw data of the text into painterly actions, which she uses to make large scale oil paintings. It is usually the final paintings themselves that are exhibited, but this show will consist entirely of the text pieces alone, seen as art objects themselves.
Ilana Zweschi lives and works in Seattle, Washington. In 2011 she graduated from Skidmore College as an Art Major/Mathematics Minor, and earned an MFA in painting from SUNY Albany in 2014. Zweschi is represented by Linda Hodges Gallery in Seattle and BDDW Gallery in New York and is an instructor at Cornish College of the Arts.
