Surf & Turf is the work of Seattle intermedia artist Jessica Dolence, Detroit visual artist Trisha Holt, and New York video and performance artist Erica Schreiner.
Their medley of work circulates around the definition and varying associations of a Surf and Turf meal. Rumored to have originated in Seattle during the World's Fair, the meal consists of steak and lobster, symbolizing middlebrow cuisine and culinary kitsch.
Jessica Dolence's projected pond installation invites the viewer to daydream or meditate over an animation that cycles between aquatic and landlocked imagery.
Trisha Holt looks at how the meal is defined; the pairing of two disparate pieces to form a unit, each carrying different semiotic meaning.
Erica Schreiner uses ingredients of flowers and vegetables that symbolize life and the importance of what happens when you destroy life — or what is left over.
