Holdfast—a noun—defines a rootlike structure that seaweeds construct as anchors. Sometimes the holdfast wraps around stones, barnacles, shells and other objects for extra weight. Some holdfast glue themselves to rocks and ledges. Sometimes the tangled holdfast mass becomes an anchor of knots and coils all by itself. The holdfast keeps the blades and fronds of seaweed upright and secure from being swept along by tides and currents.
