July 1–31, 2009
Curious Silence—curated by Renée Martin and Heather Rasmussen—brings together a group of artists working in "silence” by letting something visual they've produced speak on their behalf. Artists in this exhibition credit influences Susan Sontag, Gloria Steinem, Rosalind Kraus, Debbie Harris, Patti Smith, Kim Gordon, Marina Abramovic, Sophie Calle, and Marilyn Minter as artists, writers, and performers who have used their artistic achievements to speak for them. Through their work these icons have helped shape public awareness of post-modern femininity in a hyper-visual information-soaked culture that the artists in Curious Silence negotiate every day. Featuring Michele Abeles, Bijoux Altamirano, Jennifer Bastian, Bridget Carron, Siri Kaur, Renée Martin, Julia Paull, Heather Rasmussen, Fay Ray, and Carly Steward.
