I, Chrysalis, Open at the Close is a hyper-personal exhibition of painted works on rice paper which integrate personal symbols, the biological metamorphosis process, and hybrid Buddhist/Christian aesthetics.
Sebastian Loo draws a parallel between his personal life and the transitional site of the chrysalis as he reflects on recent experiences with ending, loss, mortal impermanence, and reconnection with the past. In this life stage, the larva abandons itself to reach the necessary instincts that foster self-transcendence and personal evolution.
Sebastian restructures and distributes symbolic organs of his past and present selves to strive for cultivation of the essential body. Instruments of perception, like the organs in the gestating chrysalis, are consulted and enhanced to empower a being’s discernment between wisdom and deception.
Sebastian Loo is an LA-based painter working with ink and colors on rice paper. His technique engages in pointillism, paper cut-out and collage approaches to join personal symbols with aesthetics from science, mythology, and spirituality.
