Borrowed Light by Warren Pope

November 6 - 29, 2025

Opening Reception,
Thursday, November 6, 5-8pm

Gallery Hours:
Friday–Sunday, 11am–4pm

Borrowed Light is the first solo exhibition to be presented in the Backspace Gallery by SOIL member Warren Pope. New paintings and drawings are featured within an installation that channels the sprawling ideation and multiple threads of Pope’s studio process. Much of the work focuses on playful archetypal subjects - clouds, burning candles, orchids, bunnies - as counterpoints to abstraction. In this absurdly layered setting, Pope explores ‘borrowed light,’ the architectural idea of illumination passing from a well-lit room to a darker interior, as a personal meditation on transference and emergence amongst creative practice, contemporary life, and subconscious partitions.

Artist Statement / Bio

Warren Armando Pope is an artist and public artist whose practice hybridizes painting, drawing, and digital techniques informed by architectural visualization. Attuned to a feeling of being neither here nor there, Pope’s work explores themes of otherness, ambiguity, transformation, and fluidity informed by multiracial, neurodiverse, and queer identity intersecting in a digital world.

Pope is a member of SOIL Gallery based in Seattle, WA. He has shown work at the Vashon Center for the Arts, Carnation Contemporary, Museum of Museums, Northwest African American Museum, and Tlaxcala3 in Mexico City. Pope is a recipient of the Allied Arts Foundation 2025 Digital Artist Award, Artist Trust 2024 GAP grant, and a Vermont Studio Center 2025 Residency. Warren is a public artist and architectural designer at Rohleder Borges Architecture and a part-time lecturer at the University of Washington College of Built Environments. He most recently completed and installed ‘Swoon’ an interactive public sculpture at Chambers Creek Regional Park in University Place, WA.
