Body Double
October 03 – 27, 2012
Reception / Thursday, October 04, 6–9pm
Body Double draws on symmetry and geometric symbolism, including within the "body" of the work the life that animates it. These large, shaped paintings variously suggest the body as a form with a waist; an oval in which the body might be reflected, as in a mirror or pond; or a coffin in which a body finally rests. Intricate drawing with a fine brush contrasts with the symmetrical spontaneity of translucent metallic pigment.
The use of roofing paper represents the artist's ongoing interest in tar: a primal underground source of fossils, fuel and prehistory, analogous to the upwelling of images from the subconscious mind.
Ziegler was represented at the Sofia Biennale in Bulgaria in 2011 with a large tar paper installation; her first New York show in 2013 will contain paintings from this Body Double body of work.
