Same Same But Different

August 01 – September 01, 2012
Reception / Thursday, August 02, 6–9pm

Same Same but Different
is an exhibition collective formed by three Brooklyn-based artists (Jay Gaskill, Fabian G. Tabibian, and Amanda Valdez) who share a common formal language of purposeful colors and simple shapes in complex arrangements. They do not share a studio nor do they make works together. Their collaboration supersedes the physical space of the studio; it exists ephemerally in conversation, in actions, and in shared thinking. The collective?s physical manifestation is in the exhibition space as a site-specific opportunity in which the three artists' work is brought together to create new meaning and propositions. The phrase "Same Same but Different" represents the nexus at which their work converges and diverges from each other.

For their eponymous exhibition at SOIL, the trio will be exhibiting a broad range of work that places the emphasis on the sames and differents not only between the artists, but also within the different branches of each individual artist's practice.

Jay Gaskill makes hard-edged abstract paintings of post-pop iconic images entirely by hand. His paintings straddle the worlds of art and design in sensibility and execution. For this show, he will be exhibiting not only painting, but also small watercolors with free-flowing line work, and a vinyl wall decal installation that frees his abstract-pop characters from the constraints of the canvas.

Fabian G. Tabibian works primarily with online media, his realm populated with imagery mined from the Internet such as abstracted favicons and complex line drawings executed via computers and mobile apps. For this exhibition the artist showcases Packets — a new series of works on paper in addition to prints created digitally. The juxtaposition of his new analog work alongside his digital pieces will highlight his unique sensitivity to color and line irregardless of medium.

Amanda Valdez's abstraction is multi-disciplinary, weaving together multiple materials and approaches to mark-making. Her work at SOIL will highlight her drawing and paintings activity as seen and experienced in her studio practice with a new installation clustering her work and exposing pieces she's previously held as private.
