In The Backspace
Tragedy and Automatism
R.K. Shuquem
August 03 – 27, 2011
Reception / Thursday, August 04, 5–8pm
R.K. Shuquem presents Tragedy and Automatism, a show of automatic drawings, sketchbook work, and a series of oil paintings called Tragedy. Tragedy is a series of picturesque oils utilizing decorative elements as well as representational figures. Narrative is suggested but not resolved. A sense that something of mythic importance is being portrayed, but the characters appear to be frozen in their own story. Shuquem will be showing his RED sketchbook, which traveled with him on tours with his former rock band, the Phantom Limbs. Also shown are some automatic drawings, mostly created in transitional states; during transition from waking to starting work, from work to going home, from home to going to sleep.
