Bin Labs Presents: Second Growth
November 5–29, 2008
Artists Sean Regan, Rachel Hibbard and Cara Tomlinson collaborate to create a video and sculptural installation examining the community surrounding the Portland Goodwill Bins.
The artist s make towering sculptural forms with video and audio components that honor and reflect our most immediate ancestors: the belongings that were part of lives, that were cared for, and then given away. Made of the sloughed skins of everyday life, these forms are emblems to our consumption, waste and resourcefulness and personify collective desires and scattered histories.
The SOIL installation is the second of several projects focusing on the Goodwill Outlet Store (The Bins) and the larger process of redistribution of consumer goods. The Bins are a sorting station that transfers goods from one state to another, from one owner to another, and from one purpose to another; the final stop before landfill, materials-salvage or purchase. The artists explore how the used-goods industry subverts and highlights systems of prestige and symbols of value using interviews with workers and shoppers, photographs and video installation.
