17 prisons in California
new work by Buddy Bunting
July 6 – July 30, 2006
Buddy Bunting will be showing selections from the Scabland Project, a series of works based on his travels to remote prisons in the American west. In small watercolors, large-scale ink wash drawings, and video, his work is a meditation on restlessness settled within a picture; capturing expansive landscapes and isolated architectural fragments in an idealized light.
Buddy Bunting lives in Seattle and is a member of the Seattle based artists collective SOIL. He was a recipient of Artists Trust GAP Award for Individual Artists Projects in 2004, and a 4Culture Special Projects Grant in 2005. His work has been shown at the Painting Center in New York City, Consolidated Works and the SOIL Gallery in Seattle, and Powells Books in Portland, Oregon.
His most recent fieldwork in September took him to 17 penitentiaries in the state of California. Work based on this trip was featured last month in New York City in the exhibition Interstate Flight at PS122.
