In The Backspace

Synedoche: a part for the whole

Margot Quan Knight

August 07 – 30, 2014
Reception / Thursday, August 07, 6–8pm

How does a trace speak for its referent? Margot Quan Knight reduces doilies to shadow, texture, and narrative through a series of material experiments. Transformed, these traces reclaim the beauty of their complex structure and celebrate aesthetic labor.

This project was made possible by support from the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs.

Margot Quan Knight holds an MFA in photography from Bard College (2009) and a BA in Studio Art from Dartmouth College (1999). From 2000- 2002 she was a sponsored photographer at FABRICA, the communication arts research center of Benetton, located in Villorba, Italy.

Margot’s work has been featured in over 70 international publications and in many exhibitions, including solo shows at GAS Art Gallery, (Turin, Italy), 911 Media Arts Center, (Seattle, W.A.), and California State University (Chico, CA) and group shows at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto (Italy), the Dotmov Festival (Sapporo, Japan), and Centre Pompidou (Paris, France).

Margot is represented by GAS Art Gallery in Turin, Italy.
