APPLICATION ITEMS

Project Description: It is imperative that your detailed description is clear and compelling.  It is also very important you leave us with a strong impression of what to expect from the proposed exhibition.  Include project title, names of participants, background research on the topic and other important thoughts about your plans for the space.

Application Form: Fill out and use the checklist to ensure your application is complete.  A PDF version of the Application Form is available to download at the bottom of this page.

Work Sample: Up to 15 digital images on CD, which should include samples of work by all participants to provide a sense of the proposed show.  Digital image files should be numbered corresponding to the Image Description List, and sized at approx. 1200 pixels on the longest dimension. For video samples we will accept DVD and CD-ROM formats.  Images are crucial to our understanding of your proposal.  We are a large group of visually- oriented artists, impressed by powerful images backed with a strong statement.

Image Description List: List your image details corresponding with their number.  Include artist’s name, title, dimensions of work, materials used and date executed for each piece.

Other Support Materials: Resumes, background research, reviews, artists’ statements or any other supplemental materials you see as crucial to your presentation.  These items are recommended to include at your discretion.  However, we are most impressed by concisely written new ideas, strong images and cutting edge work.

SASE: Proposal materials will not be returned unless indicated on the Application and accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Proposals are accepted anytime, in person or by mail. In person submissions will be accepted during gallery hours, Thursday – Sunday, 12-5 pm.

THE FINE PRINT
Because we are a self-supported, noncommercial organization, we are not able to provide curators with a stipend.   All costs for the show, i.e. shipping and insuring of artworks, postcard design, ordering and printing, postage, wall titles, reception food and drink, etc., are the responsibility of the curator. Additionally, the curator is responsible for installing and de-installing the show within the given schedule.

What SOIL helps with:

  • SOIL will assist with distributing a press release, and help pay for announcement postcards, as funds allow.

  • SOIL provides staff for the gallery during open hours, but often the curator is asked to donate at least one day to sit at the gallery.

  • SOIL provides a ready to hang space, with clean floors and white walls. The curator must leave the gallery in a ready to hang condition.  SOIL has tools and white wall paint.

  • SOIL encourages curators to ask the members (with diverse gallery skills) for assistance.

SALES
SOIL is a non-commercial, non-profit gallery and SOIL members are not experienced salespeople. Our focus is on showing strong and engaging work.

All sales will happen between the artist or curator and the buyer.  Gallery sitters are happy put the artist or curator and buyer in touch with each other.  For your show, it is important to provide the gallery with a written copy of the price list and all necessary contact information so that we can make this happen.

SOIL encourages artists/curators to donate 15% of all sales to the gallery. However, this is not a requirement.  We keep this percentage low because we are dedicated to a non-profit model to support emerging and innovative artists.
